End of the Year Challenge - Different Strokes From Different Folks

End of the Year Challenge - Different Strokes From Different Folks   9 3/4 x 11   Oil on panel

This challenge is hosted by Karin Jurick on her Different Strokes From DIfferent Folks blog.  Artists that chose to participate emailed a photo of themselves to Karin. When Karin had all of the photos, she randomly emailed a photo to an artist. So, most of us don't know much if anything about the subject of the portraits we would paint.

I really did enjoy making the painting of this lady - I don't know her name or anything about her yet.  To understand what I'm saying, go to the Different Strokes From Different Folks blog and see what other artitsts have done. You can also go to You Tube to see the photos and the painting.

I'm having a problem with this BLOG posting software interface so I'm not sure how this will look!  It appears one way in "compose" then another way after it's "published".  :-| That being said, my next whine is that I had to make HUNDREDS (no kidding) of photographs before 1) the color was close, 2) the glare from the shiny surface was gone and 3) the photo was in FOCUS!

Airport Travelers - DSFDF Challenge 52-54

Airport Travelers 9x12 Oil on masonite

This is my version of Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF) challenge 52-54. Periodically (two or three weeks) Karin posts a photograph on the DSFDF blog for artists to make their art then send a photo of their art back to Karin who posts it on the DSFDF blog. It's worth a look to see how different people make different art from the same subject matter.

City Rooftops - DSFDF Challenge

City Rooftops 12x17 Oil on canvas

This is my version of Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF) challenge. I didn't submit this to her blog as the deadline for submissions was several days ago. Now there's another challenge - maybe I'll have the time to participate in the new challenge.

It's really an education to see all of the "entries" to Karin's challenges. She posts a photograph on her blog then artists submit their version / vision of the photo. Take a look at the blog at http://differentstrokesfromdifferentfolks.blogspot.com/

Cupcakes (DSFDF Challenge Week 46 - 48)

Cupcakes (DSFDF Challenge Week 46 - 48) 16x20 Oil on canvas

I wouldn't have chosen cupcakes as a subject for a painting, but what the heck? :-) It was fun - after a while. But it was really harder than I thought that it would be! At least there isn't much green in this painting. I seem to often make paintings with a lot of GREEN!

Check out the other submissions to Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF). It's really interesting what the different artists put down in their works. Well, I THINK that it's interesting. :-)

Solving The Worlds Problems

Solving The Worlds Problems 12x16 Oil on Masonite

This is my submission for Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF) blog where she posts a picture and artists make their art. It's fun - for me, anyhow. Check it out.

Two guys, maybe in a barber shop, or waiting for new tires to be put on their cars. The guy on the right is doing all of the talking the guy on the left just wants to get out of there.

This is my first painting in a couple of weeks (more or less) as I've been moving my art stuff from a bedroom in our house to my studio. (See earlier posts). I'm not completely done with the studio; probably never will be. :-)

One of my next art projects will be working on rendering body parts. e.g. hands with fingers. Sheesh.

Rowing on Lake Michigan

Rowing on Lake Michigan 9x12 Oil on Masonite

My submission to Karin Jurick's "Different Strokes From Different Folks" blog challenge.

I haven't painted pictures in a while - I've been painting the floor of my brand new studio! This was a nice break. At least I wasn't on my hands and knees. :-)

Summer Vegetables - Wk 37-38 DSFDF Challenge

Summer Vegetables 8x10 Oil on Masonite

This is my submission to Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF) challenge for week 37-38. Every other week or so Karin posts a photograph on the DSFDF blog and artists from around the world submit their work to be posted.

This is the only painting I've done for about a week. I've been working on my backyard studio - putting joint compound on the newly installed sheetrock. I hope that I can begin painting the walls (and ceiling) this weekend then begin moving my art "stuff" into THE STUDIO from a 3rd bedroom in our house.

Pennsylvania Farm #2

Pennsylvania Farm #2 12x30 Oil on Masonite

This is a larger painting suggested by the Week 35-36 Challenge on Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF). The painting that I submitted was posted earlier. Karen Jurick posts a photo on her DSFDF blog and "challenges" artists to make their art based on this photo.

I saw this photo as almost an abstract and tried to render it as such - ALMOST an abstract. The buildings and silos in the foreground have some shading but the fields have no detail.

Pennsylvania Farms

Pennsylvania Farms 8x10 Oil on Masonite

This is my interpretation of Karin Jurick's challenge in her Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF) challenge.

For this challenge Karin posted a black & white photo of a farm and the responding artists were to make a color painting.

Excuses: In the painting the silos are light grey. My rude camera and/or photo software adjusted the grey silos to blue silos and I had to leave the silos blue else the foreground green went reddish! Or radish or whatever the crops are. :-) Rule #1 - the problem is always the camera.

Madison Ave, New York City

This is my submission to Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF) Week 32 - 34 Challenge, Madison Ave, New York City. Karin periodically (usually every two weeks) posts one of her photographs on the DSFDF blog and artists are invited to make their art from the photo.

There are a couple of things I would like to "adjust". Maybe I'll do it - maybe not. :-)

5/15/2009 - Made a few "adjustments". I'll sign it and call it "DONE"

Diana's companioin - DSFDF Challenge

This is my version of Karin Jurick's latest challenge in her blog "Different Strokes From Different Folks" (DSFDF). Every two weeks or so, Karin posts a photograph for interested artists to use to make some art - painting, drawing and etc. We send a photo of our art to Karin & she posts our photos in the blog. Cool!

Diana's Companion. 8x10 oil on masonite.

I've found it easier to begin a painting when the masonite or canvas isn't stark white.

This painting is done with Gamblin' Torrit Grey, Winsor & Newton's Zinc White and Gamblin's Ultramarine Blue. The story behind the Torrit Grey is really interesting (at least I think so!) - read about it at Gamblin's Torrit Grey Web Page.

This masonite panel is tinted a light blue but I do tint with other colors. I pour some white gesso into a container and add some acrylic paint until I have a color that I like. I usually give the masonite or canvas a couple of coats of this colored gesso mix depending on how well it covers or I'm happy with how the tinting looks.

Karin's challenge photo can be seen here.

Beach Family

Beach Family 8"x10" Oil on masonite.

This is my version of Karin Jurick's Week 27-28 challenge on her Different Strokes From Different Folks blog. Check out the other artists' paintings. It's really neat how different artists make such different paintings from the same photograph.

The challenge photograph is shown below. I moved the family members around a bit - mainly, I grouped them closer together.

The family has probably been on the beach too long, they're a bit red from the sun. :-) Dad was wise enough, of course, to put that white stuff on his nose so that his nose wouldn't burn. I guess he didn't think about his arms or legs!

Karin's photograph for the challenge.

Sushi - Week 25-26 DSFDF Challenge

"Sushi" - 12x12 Oil on canvas panel

This is my attempt to render the Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF) challenge. They're supposed to be "california rolls" with some sushi ginger and some wasabi on the plate.

Take a look at what others have done. It's really interesting how we all have a different take on the painting, but most are really the same only different! :-)

WIGS - DSFDF Week 23-24 Challenge

WIGS - DSFDF Week 23-24 Challenge. 11x14 Oil on canvas panel.

This is my response to Karin Jurick's "Different Strokes From Different Folks" biweekly challenge. The challenge(s) and others' paintings can be found here.

The real storefront (not a wig shop) is located in downtown Rogers, AR.

This is the photograph posted in DSFDF.
