Cupcakes (DSFDF Challenge Week 46 - 48) 16x20 Oil on canvas
I wouldn't have chosen cupcakes as a subject for a painting, but what the heck? :-) It was fun - after a while. But it was really harder than I thought that it would be! At least there isn't much green in this painting. I seem to often make paintings with a lot of GREEN!
Check out the other submissions to Different Strokes From Different Folks (DSFDF). It's really interesting what the different artists put down in their works. Well, I THINK that it's interesting. :-)
I think it's always good for us to push ourselves and paint something that isn't in our realm of comfort - you did an excellent job on this!
ReplyDeleteThese are cool, like your placement of them and the angle, yes they are difficult I'm struggling with mine.
ReplyDeleteClaire, Thank you for saying that I did and "excellent" job! I really do enjoy Karin's challenges because they truly are challenges. (for me, at least) :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks again,
Ken B.
Hi Diana. As you know the challenge had 3 full cupcakes and two halves. I struggled with that for a while then did some hasty cropping, big time!!!! (KUDOS to those who did all of 'em!) Then the straight across seemed B-O-R-I-N-G to me so I used the photo editor to tilt the picture.
ReplyDelete:-)
Thanks for looking at my painting!

Well done, Ken. I like how you added variety to to background by introducing some yellow. I agree...cupcakes are harder to paint than they first appear.
ReplyDeleteHi Dean - thanks for dropping by. I finally spread the paint as if it were really icing and I almost got the feel/look of icing. I guess that's what I people mean when they say "be the ---".
ReplyDeleteAs for the background - I shy away from BLACK and WHITE. (I use grays for whites and reds+greens for my darks (black).) ANYHOWWWWW - I couldn't bear all of that white. :-)
Thanks again
Ken B
I like your rendering of these cupcakes! You're good at still lifes!
ReplyDeleteAnd the previous post is lovely too, has a nice story behind (I liked to read about your parents having lived in C. America, it was also a bit nostalgic...)
Best regards,
Carolina
Hi Carolina. I was born in Panama & my brother ws born in Guatamala, I was 4 or 5 yrs old when my family moved back to the "states" after WWII. I became a US citizen in 1969! There's a LONG story behind THAT statement! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in the military in the '60s some of our assignments took us to Bogata,Colombia, Lima, Peru, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Quito, Ecuador. From those cities we flew to other parts of those and neighboring countries. So I feel a real connection to Central and South America. At one point (in the '60s) I was able to speak passable spanish. No mas!
I got wordy again - whoops! My bad. :-)
Ken B.
Excellent job on the cupcakes, Ken! Yummy. :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Liz, glad you liked my cupcakes. I struggled with this one - as I often do with Jurick's DSFDF challenges. This one turned out mo bettah than some.
ReplyDeleteI hope your days are good ones and that you can make some of your wonderful paintings soon.
Take care
Ken B
Thanks for sharing that... get wordy whenever you feel like ;)
ReplyDelete(OMG, you've been to Lima!... I wasn't born yet, but ... that's cool!)
You should do more cupcakes, this is a great entry!
ReplyDeleteHi Ann, thank you for dropping by and for the very nice compliment. Without the "challenge" I'd probably NEVER thought of cupcakes! :-)
