Menton France - Old Man Reading Newspaper near archway

$150.00 plus shipping
Man Reading His Newspaper   17x24 Oils on canvas panel

This painting is inspired by two of Jilly's Menton Daily Photos.  The man walking through the arch and the stariway on the right is one photo "Up Down and Roundabout". The gentleman reading his newspaper is from another photo "Old Wall, Old Man".

 April 21, 2010  -  update.

I did some of my fiddlin' - put the other leg of the bench in, and put the vertical things in the hand rail (what are they called anyway?).

  1. Love this one, Ken!I noticed you were faithful to Menton and liked to mix several views to give original paintings, and huge, because 17x24! How do you do for storing your impressive collection, or maybe you sell everything as soon as they are finished?Lucky man, in this case!
I like the composition, with the staircases, and the mistery of the shaded man.

  2. My gosh Ken, all these posts in one go!! I think you've found your subject matter! Those portraits are some of the best work I've seen - a distinct painting style and such character in the faces. Your work reminds me a bit of Carolee Clark (http://caroleeclark.wordpress.com/), one of my favourite artists. Well done!

  3. Ladies - Sylviane & Liz, thank you for your generous & VERY kind comments! Jilly's blog is so rich with "characters" and scenery that I can't NOT make paintings based upon them. :-)

I haven't sold anything although I'm beginning to try harder and "get out" more. My 2 art clubs are having shows the first week of May. Perhaps I can make a deal that they can't refuse! :-) Until then I stack them (literally) in my studio in their frames.

Thank you again for such generous compliments!

  4. This is really intriguing. I like the structure of the work..the distinct spaces . The silhouetted figure is mysterious. Reminds me of a film noir narrative somehow!.

  5. Thanks again, Liz. I wanted the "walking man" to be a counterpoint to the seated man. In the original painting there is a suggestion of color in the walking man's jacket. I have a little more work to do to finish this up - need to finish the hand rail on the stairs, enhance or define the cracks in the stucco blah blah blah. You know what I'm talking about. :-) Always some fiddlin' to be done.

  6. Hi Ken,
I've been out of cyberspace for a few days (modem problems), and whew you've certainly been so prolific!!!
I love this painting, I think those two photos together work really nicely. I like the effect of the contrast, it caught my attention right away when I saw the thumbnail on my blog... (btw, it also seems to work cropped, as in the thumbnail, don't you think?)
    Warm regards,
    Carolina

  7. Carolina, sorry to hear that you had a technology cramp! :-) It's amazing how much we depend upon being able to use the internet, isn't it? :-(

Thank you for all of your comments - you were a really busy person when the modem issue was resolved!

  8. Nice touches, Ken! Those details (the other leg and the 'things' :) were necessary, although I couldn't notice at first. Now seeing them I say 'yes! that's a good addition!'
    Big hug!

  9. Hi Carolina!!! :-) Hugs to you, too. DOUBLE! It's been a really good day. I varnished several paintings for our Guild show that we install next week, I was invited to submit a painting for a benefit silent auction and the weather was WARM! :-)

Isn't it funny that I (try) paint impressionistic paintings, that I seem to focus on details? Something wrong there, I think!

Have a nice weekend. Hope is all well with your family. No posts for a while; you must be busy being a mom/wife - as usual! Lucky family you have. Make sure that they know it! :-)

  12. Ken, I love - just LOVe - he way you've combined the two photos. I know both areas well and yet in your painting it looks absolutely right. I almost can't believe it. Am so impressed and so love the style of this painting. Oh well done! Gosh I wish I could paint but at least this is the next best thing when you paint my photos! Thanks so much.

  13. Well, gosh, ma'am! Jilly, thanks to you I have inspirations for countless paintings and the more I see the more I want to see! :-)

I tell you what, you send information on how to work a camera and I'll send information on how to paint a painting! ha ha ha ha!

I have a very nice Fuji "automatic" camera with "auto-focus" that remains surly when I use the camera. A tip of my hat to you for being able to make a photo that's in focus!
