Yellow Tulips - Rookie Painter Challenge 5

$100.00 plus shipping
Yellow Tulips  12x16  Oils on gessoed panel

This is my entry into the ROOKIEPAINTER blog Challenge Number 5.

I don't do flowers very often and maybe this painting will illustrate why. I not totally happy with it (am I ever?) but there comes a time when I need to just STOP and leave well enough alone.

I'm looking forward to the next "challenge" - I THINK!  :-)

Really, it was fun to make this painting and explore new stuff.

It seems that my camera is being naughty once more and focusing on anything but the subject I'm photographing! It has the "automatic focus" and I've not learned a way to override that.  Maybe if I were to read the manual?  hmmmmmmm

  1. Had a look at the other tulip paintings Ken. I don't know why you aren't happy with yours? You've achieved lovely clean lines and colours that glow. By the way, reading the manual always helps!!

  2. I like these flowers. I like to draw flowers because they allow to do chaos and still you recognise the object:-).
What camera do you have? I was learning by heart my Canon manual for Moscow Photo blog and there was no result, silly me. Until a friend of mine, a photo-pro explained where to move the wheel to get blurry background. I can share the magic with you (if you have Canon camera, of course:). No need for theory when you have a friend.

  3. Liz - Re: camera manuals - does looking at the pictures count as "reading" the manual? There isn't anything that specifically speaks to focus except recognizing the "beep beep" indicating that it has focus. :-(

Irina - I have a Fuji Finepix J10. I don't have active control of the aperture nor lens. The lens "zooms" to a point then electronics "zoom" even "closer".

But thank you both for your kind words and attempts at resolving my camera issues. :-)

  4. Hi Ken!
    Your flowers are just great!
I can't believe the camera is misbehaving again??? Bad, bad girl...

  5. Hi Carolina! Thank you for your compliment on my sad, sad pot of tulips! :-)

I know what my camera is doing - it's focusing on the background (the wall) and not on the object in the foreground. Maybe I need to buy it some eye glasses?

I'll talk to you later. I wish you and your family the best of all things. Be happy. Make art!

  7. Hi Sylviane! Thank you! I need all of the luck I can get with my camera. I'm trying all sorts of different combinations of settings. It's a good thing that I don't have to buy film! I was having no trouble at all since it's repair then all of a sudden it wants to focus on objects behind my paintings. A mind of it's own! :-)
